Ocimum tenuiflorum, leaf. Ayurveda’s “incomparable one”, a peppery, clove-scented cousin of kitchen basil. Sold today as an adaptogen for everyday stress.
What the research supports
- Stress: placebo-controlled trials (2012, 2022) found lower stress scores after six to eight weeks, and the 2022 trial also found lower hair cortisol.
- Sleep: the 2022 trial reported better sleep quality than placebo.
- Anxiety: one small, older study without a placebo group suggested a benefit.
- Blood sugar: small trials found a modest drop in fasting blood sugar.
The dose that was actually studied
125 mg of a standardized extract twice a day (2022 trial), or 1,000 to 1,200 mg a day of general extract in older trials. For liquid extracts, follow the label.
Who should not take it
- Pregnant women and couples trying to conceive.
- People on diabetes medication or blood thinners, and anyone with surgery in the next two weeks.
- People with an underactive thyroid, unless their doctor agrees.
