Detox teas and cleanses get all the attention, but if you want to reduce what goes into your body every day, start with the thing you drink the most: water. American tap water is among the safest in the world, and it still carries trace contaminants that a basic pitcher filter does not reliably remove, including PFAS “forever chemicals”, lead from old pipes, nitrate and arsenic in some areas.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is the filtration method labs and bottled water plants use, and it used to mean drilling under your sink. Countertop RO units now do it with no plumbing at all. Here is what RO actually removes, what the research says about PFAS, the downsides nobody mentions, and the three countertop systems we would put in our own kitchens.

Countertop reverse osmosis at a glance

  • 🧪 PFAS (forever chemicals)Excellent: RO removed nearly all PFAS in independent testing
  • 🚰 Lead, arsenic, nitrateExcellent when certified to NSF/ANSI 58
  • 🧩 MicroplasticsVery effective: the membrane blocks particles
  • 🪨 Healthy mineralsRemoved too; easy to get from food or a mineral stage
  • 💰 Ongoing costReplacement filters every 6 to 24 months

🔬 How reverse osmosis works

A reverse osmosis system pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores around 0.0001 microns, small enough to let water molecules through while holding back dissolved salts, metals and most chemical contaminants. Countertop units add carbon stages before and after the membrane to catch chlorine, volatile organic compounds and taste problems. The rejected contaminants go into a waste stream that you pour out or that drains to a separate tank.

☠️ Why PFAS changed the conversation

PFAS are a family of thousands of man-made chemicals used in non-stick pans, stain-proof fabrics and firefighting foam. They break down extremely slowly, build up in the body, and have been linked in research to higher cholesterol, effects on the immune system and certain cancers. In 2024 the EPA set the first national enforceable drinking water limits for PFAS, including 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS. In 2025 the agency said it would keep those two limits while giving water utilities more time to comply, so many systems will not have to meet them for years.

The most useful study for consumers came from Duke University and NC State in 2020. Researchers tested 89 point-of-use filters in real homes. Under-sink reverse osmosis and two-stage filters removed nearly all of the PFAS measured. Activated carbon pitchers and fridge filters removed some, but results varied widely, and neglected filters performed worst.

Our read: if you are worried about PFAS, reverse osmosis is the most reliable home option, as long as the system is independently certified and you change the filters on time.

📋 Check your water first

  • City water: your utility must publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report listing what was detected. Search your utility’s name plus “water quality report”.
  • Well water: nobody tests it for you. Get a certified lab test for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and lead at least once, and retest every few years.
  • Older home? Homes built before 1986 may have lead pipes or solder. There is no safe level of lead for children.

⚖️ The honest downsides of RO

  • It removes minerals too. Calcium and magnesium are filtered out along with contaminants. For most people food is the main source of these minerals, but some systems add a remineralization stage for taste.
  • It removes fluoride. If your family relies on fluoridated tap water for children’s teeth, talk to your dentist about fluoride toothpaste or other options.
  • It creates wastewater. RO always rejects some water. Countertop units are more efficient than older under-sink systems, but expect some.
  • Filters cost money. Budget for replacement filters every 6 to 24 months, and actually change them.
  • “Tested” is not “certified”. Look for certification to NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis), 53 (health contaminants like lead), 401 (emerging contaminants) and P473 (PFOA and PFOS) from NSF, IAPMO or WQA.

1. Best overall: AquaTru Countertop Reverse Osmosis Purifier

AquaTru is the countertop RO system we trust most because of its certifications. It is certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI standards including 53, 58, 401 and P473, covering 84 contaminants including lead, PFOA and PFOS, and microplastics. There is no plumbing: fill the tap-water tank, plug it in, and purified water collects in a separate tank. Filters last from 6 months to 2 years depending on the stage.

Best overall water filter

3. Best budget RO: Waterdrop C2SL

The Waterdrop C2SL brings countertop RO down to around the price of a premium pitcher. It is sized for one or two people, uses a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, and adds a mineral stage that puts calcium and magnesium back for a less flat taste. It is third-party tested by SGS rather than certified to the NSF/ANSI RO standard, which is the trade-off for the price.

Best budget RO

Waterdrop C2SL Countertop RO with Minerals

Compact countertop reverse osmosis for 1 to 2 people, with a mineral stage that adds back calcium and magnesium for taste.

  • 7-stage RO with mineral filter
  • 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio
  • Up to 528 gallons or 12 months per filter

💧 Get the most from your filter

  • Change filters on schedule. An old filter can perform worse than no filter at all.
  • Clean the tanks every few weeks with warm soapy water to prevent biofilm.
  • Use filtered water for cooking, coffee, tea and baby formula, not just drinking.
  • Eat your minerals: leafy greens, nuts, seeds, beans and dairy or fortified alternatives cover calcium and magnesium.
  • Reduce other PFAS sources too: swap scratched non-stick pans for stainless steel or cast iron.

The honest bottom line

You do not need a filter to fear your tap water, but if you want to cut your daily exposure to PFAS, lead and other trace contaminants, reverse osmosis is the most effective home option, and countertop units make it easy for renters and anyone who does not want to drill. Choose a system with real certifications, change the filters on time, and get your minerals from food. AquaTru is our top pick; Waterdrop C2SL is the smart budget buy. Frequently asked questions

Is reverse osmosis water healthy to drink every day?

Yes for most people. It is very clean water without most minerals. As long as you eat a varied diet, you will get your calcium and magnesium from food. Choose a mineral-adding model if you prefer the taste.

Is a pitcher filter good enough?

It depends on your water. Carbon pitchers improve taste and reduce chlorine and some contaminants, but independent testing found their PFAS removal was inconsistent. If PFAS or lead are a concern, RO or a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 and P473 is the safer bet.

Does reverse osmosis remove microplastics?

Yes. The membrane’s pores are far smaller than microplastic particles. The health effects of microplastics in water are still being studied, but if you want them out, RO is very effective.
